This unusual smoke helmet appears to have been manufactured for the commercial market as a means of escaping a smoke filled area. The remains of the original box feature a label which states that after being soaked in water the helmet can provide the wearer with several minutes of protection in order to them to escape a smoke filled room or building. Unfortunately the remainder of the label is missing, so manufacturer details are at present unknown. The hood is of a simple design, and was likely influenced by the rudimentary designs which appeared during the First World War. It features a large single eyepiece made from mica, and a simple cord to secure the hood around the wearers neck.

This is an example of one of the first respirator designs featured in the Siebe Gorman Puretha line of products for use in industrial applications. The design of the facepiece itself has been described in 1948 by Sir Robert Henry Davis as the "United States Army Type" hence the striking similarities it has with US made respirators of the late 1910s and early 1920s. These utilised the French Tissot principle in order to prevent fogging of the eyepieces, this was done by means of directing air over the eyepieces using tubes on the inside of the facepiece. This coupled with the advances in facepiece moulding technology resulted in a considerably more robust and advanced design which could provide higher levels of protection. It has been speculated that this design was originally designed and trialed as a replacement for the now obsolete Small Box Respirator, however it was never adopted into service with the Small Box Respirator eventually being replaced by the Mk.II and the Mk.III General Service Respirators. Instead, these "United States Army Type" facepieces were utilised for industrial purposes.

The Salvus was a lightweight oxygen rebreather manufactured by Siebe Gorman designed for use in industrial, rescue, and shallow water diving applications depending on its configuration. Several different facepiece types exist, one of which is shown here. This particular type is designed to be used for land applications with the "Admiralty" pattern Salvus which featured the breathing bag worn round the neck, and the actual rebreather unit secured to the wearers left side, hence the long hose. It is made from stockinette covered rubber and features an oral-nasal mask and is secured by means of an 8 point adjustable elastic head harness.

Several different facepiece types exist, one of which is shown here. This particular type is designed to be used for land applications with the "Half Hour" Type Salvus, most commonly seen used in rescue applications. The "Half Hour" type differs from the "Admiralty" type mentioned above as it features the breathing bag secured to the wearers left side, and the actual rebreather unit secured to the wearers chest, hence the fairly short hose. It is made from black rubber and features an oral-nasal mask and is secured by means of an 8 point adjustable elastic head harness. The rubber stopper shown in the image would be used to plug the hose from inside the mask when not in use.

This interesting example of a Puretha Respirator, based on the Mk.V General Service Respirator features a facepiece and hose made from white rubber instead of the more commonly seen Black. Other than this striking characteristic, it remains exactly the same as any other Puretha Respirator based on the Mk.V design. As is the case with many Siebe Gorman respirators of this period, the component parts are actually made by other companies. The facepiece of this example was manufactured by Ferguson Shiers in February 1958, the Siebe Gorman stamp presumably added on assembly of the components is several months later than this, as well as the characteristic "ESSGEE" brand label in between the eyepieces.

Type:  MkV Industrial Facepiece

Manufacturer(s): Siebe Gorman

Filter Type: Compressed Air Line

Date(s): 3 58 (Facepiece)

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No:

This unusual piece marketed under the Siebe Gorman "ESSGEE" branding features a heavily modified facepiece based on the MkV Service Respirator. Clean air provided via a compressed air line enters the facepiece through two hoses via a T-Piece fitted in the original location of the hose. It would then be exhaled through what was likely a flapper type exhale valve fitted to an elbow connector fitted into the microphone port. The entire original exhale valve assembly has been completely removed and replaced with a voice diaphragm with a protective fine mesh cover. It is worth noting that other variations in this design existed but instead retained the original exhale valve assembly, and in some cases and had an additional 60mm filter mount fitted to the microphone port despite retaining the compressed air line feature.

As well as being utilised for conventional industrial respirators, the MkIV General Service Respirator was also used as part of the Siebe Gorman Antipoys, a type of basic fresh air breathing apparatus. This particular example unusually features a large ARP Home Office Certification Stamp on the side of the facepiece, suggesting that this was likely used by ARP members for conducting fire fighting and for rescue purposes.

This facepiece, also designed for the Antipoys Apparatus like the above example features a post war MkV General Service Respirator facepiece manufactured by Ferguson Shiers & Co in 1957. It also has an additional stamp by Siebe Gorman, likely added during final assembly of the actual components which make up the whole Antipoys Apparatus kit. Unusually this version is fitted with a more heavy duty hose with a considerably thicker diameter when compared to those typically seen fitted to MkIV and MkV facepieces. It is likely these more heavy duty hoses were more suitable for repeated and potentially harsh use in industrial, fire fighting or rescue applications.

Like the above example, this facepiece is designed for use as part of the Antipoys Apparatus. It features a post war manufactured MkV General Service Respirator facepiece again manufactured by Ferguson Shiers & Co, although this example is of a slightly earlier date being made in November 1954. It differs from the above example in that the hose is made from plain black rubber and does not have the addition of stockinette, much like the variation which existed with wartime MkV General Service Respirators.

This is a replica of an unusual Mk.IV variant, used alongside a similarly modifed Mk.V (shown below) that was used in the early 1950s by the Microbiological Research Department of Porton Down during Operation Cauldron and Operation Hesperus. It features the facepiece of a Mk.IV Special T-Mic Respirator which has had the original filter and hose removed and a rubber plug secured in its place. A 60mm filter mount with an integrated inlet valve is then secured into the microphone port on the side of the facepiece, to this a D/8/43 Particulate filter was fitted. It is unknown what the actual designation of this respirator is, or why it was used when the Lightweight Respirator in its various forms was readily available. It is thought that these respirators may have originally been early prototypes for the Lightweight Respirator, but this is unconfirmed.

As well as lending to a range of respirators intended for industrial applications, the facepiece of the Civilian Duty Respirator was also used as part of several early Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Sets manufactured by Siebe Gorman. In place of the conventional filter, it is fitted with a simple regulator to which the hose was attached by means of a threaded connection. The remainder of the facepiece remains relatively unchanged, other than the Siebe Gorman Essgee brand logo between the eyepiece, and a slightly modernised head harness which has an additional neck strap fitted.

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No:

Following the Second World War, a quantity of respirators for industrial purposes were produced using either surplus facepieces, or utilising the original moulds. The most prominent manufacturer of these was Siebe Gorman, a company with experience in making various types of safety equipment from the late 1800s. This particular example features a standard Civilian Duty Respirator pattern of facepiece with the addition of the "ESSGEE" branding in between the eyepieces, and an industrial filter for the specific purpose of providing protection against acid gases.

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No:

This unusual variation of a later Gaspro Respirator features a facepiece manufactured using a modified mould originally made for producing Lightweight Respirator facepieces. This can be seen in the less prominent triangle in the nose area to which the exhale valve is attached, and a circular outline on the side of the facepiece where the opening for the filter mount would have originally been located. Additionally, this example also has rubber head harness identical in pattern to the Industrial Lightweight Respirator shown below. The filter is a type "CC" and is suitable for protection against "Organic Compounds boiling above 60°C" and "particulate smokes and dusts, including Cyanide Dusts but excluding Hydrocanic Acid Gas".

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No: UK011

Alongside the recycling of MkIV, MkV Service Respirators, Civilian Duty Respirators and their moulds in the post Second World War years, several industrial models of the Lightweight Respirator pattern were also made. The example pictured is manufactured from green rubber, and like many of the respirators manufactured by Siebe Gorman for industrual purposes has a rubber head harness. It also features a simplified exhale valve holder, containing only the valve itself and no voice diaphragm. The filter is derived from that fitted to the Gaspro series (shown above) however it also features a conventional 60mm thread as per the filters designed for the Lightweight Respirator series to allow for ease of removal. Interestingly, the front of the exhale valve holder is exactly the same as the base of the filter, this is likely as a result of keeping the manufacturing costs low, an important factor for a commercially available respirator. This respirator was also manufactured from black rubber and featured black painted metal components.

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No:

This highly unusual variation of a Lightweight Respirator features a filter mount positioned above and between the eyepieces. Both Mk.6 and Mk.7 Respirators were used as the basis for this strange configuration. The facepiece was a unique design manufactured using a specific mould, and not a modification of a pre-existing facepiece. The other individual component parts remained the same as on the standard Mk.7. It is unclear at present what the exact reason for this bizarre design was, however the fact that all period images show it being used by scientists involved in nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s suggests that it may have been designed and manufactured  specifically for use in these tests. The Light Container Mk.III shown in the image is purely for illustrative purposes, all available period images suggest that this respirator was only fitted with the D/8/43 Canister, a considerably more slim and lightweight filter only suitable for protection against particulates.

This unusual variation of the C7, also modified by British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) features a 40mm threaded mount to allow standard respirator filters to be fitted. In this instance it is fitted with a D17 filter manufactured by the Leyland and Birmingham Rubber Co. Unlike the other types of respirator modified by BNFL, the C7s do not appear to have been individually serialised in the same manner. The use of the C7 for such applications is quite interesting given its somewhat cheaper and less durable construction when compared to other respirators available to BNFL during this period, however it does seem that quite a few were modified into this configuration. Another example fitted with the later PS10 filter is held in the archives of the Science Museums Group.

Filter Type: Dust or Paint/Lacquer Cartridge

Date(s):

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No:

This commercially available respirator can be used for two different applications depending on what filters it is fitted with. Each filter configuration comes with its own name. The Pulvasorb Dust Respirator configuration features either a simple sponge filter, or filter disks for the purpose of protecting the wearer against large dust particles. In the "Essjee Light Fume Mask configuration it provides protection against the liquid particles and vapour generated during paint spraying operations by means of filtering air through both a liquid particle filter disk which catches large liquid particles and a vapour absorbent cartridge. This respirator features an inlet valve internally, an exhale valve on the side, and an adjustable elastic head strap to ensure a correct fit.

Type: No.694 Respirator

Manufacturer(s): Unknown

Filter Type: Unknown

Date(s): N/A

GasMasksUK Collection Serial No:

This unusual respirator is best described as a half mask with permanently attached goggles. It features a simple aluminium cup which covers the mouth and nose,  and contains a simple sponge filter beneath the screw cap on the front and a flapper type exhale valve. This is bonded to a pair of goggles made from a synthetic leather material featuring two plastic eyepieces. The whole respirator is secured by means of two elastic straps. Several variations of this type of respirator exist, including some with a permanently attached hood. This particular version appears to be a later model given the use of plastic on the eyepieces apposed to glass with metal securing rings as is present on early models. Period brochures suggest that the early models were first available in 1946. It is unclear at present who manufactured these respirators given the lack of markings other than "Made in England" being stamped into the cap which secures the filter.

The Vista Vision was Siebe Gormans most popular style of full face respirator made solely for industrial purposes. The majority of previous full face industrial respirators manufactured or marketed by Siebe Gorman were either adaptations of, or directly based on respirators designed for civil defence or military applications. The Vista Vision stepped away from this trend by offering a large transparent visor allowing for greater vision and a less claustrophobic feel for the wearer. The design also allowed for a considerable amount of variation in configuration options for different applications. The example pictured is one of the earlier types, featuring a chromed steel eyepiece retaining ring, stockinette covered hose and fabric head harness. It is fitted with the Type A filter for protection against Ammonia, denoted by it being painted blue.
